1. Background
Close to 95,000 refugees live in refugee camps in Eastern Sudan in a protracted refugee situation. The Government of Sudan, UNHCR, WFP and international as well as national NGOs assist these refugees in the form of health, nutrition, water and sanitation services. Many of these camps are experiencing increasing outbreaks of diarrhoeal diseases during the rainy season since last couple of years. Abuda refugee camp, with a population of 3,688, is also one of the camps where patients of acute watery diarrhoeal diseases were identified during the rainy season of 2007. Abuda refugee camp is the only camp in eastern Sudan where there is no pipeline network for supplying potable water to the refugees and the refugees have to collect water from a distribution point near an elevated tank. At present, there is only one functional borehole, but one more borehole will be constructed by the end of this year to supply additional water to the refugees in the camp. Construction work of this deep borehole has been approved by the Local Committee on Contract of UNHCR Representation Office of Sudan in Khartoum.
Due to the lack of resources, it has been realized that the external assistance of about 60,000 SDG (30,000 US$) would be necessary to supplement available UNHCR fund of about 30,000 SDG (15,000 US$) in the year 2007 to construct water supply pipeline distribution network in Abuda refugee camp.
2. Objective(s):
To construct water supply pipeline network in Abuda refugee camp to meet the UNHCR minimum standards of providing more than 20 litres of potable water from tap distribution points within a reach of 200 meters distance from farthest dwelling in the refugee camp.
3. Description of Beneficiaries:
It is expected that the Abuda refugee population of 3,688 refugees as well as the host community will benefit from this project.
